Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia surgery (or man boobs surgery), commonly referred to as male chest reduction surgery, is a procedure in which the fat and in some cases breast tissue in the male chest area, is broken down and removed.

During puberty most teenage boys will develop fatty tissue around the chest or breast area, which for the majority of people usually subsides naturally within a year or so. For the remaining men, it can remain with them for the rest of their adult lives.

The official term gynaecomastia is widely used by doctors and medical professionals, but the condition is also commonly referred to as man boobs. The severity of the condition varies with each individual.

What is Gynecomastia surgery?

Day of Surgery

Breast reduction for men (or man boob reduction) is carried out through a small incision around the areola to break up the fat beneath the skin. The fat is then removed by a syringe or vacuum pump. Depending on the extent of the fatty tissue, the surgeon may want to remove any excess breast tissue which can be done at the same time as liposuction.

Anaesthesia

Liposuction on male breasts is performed under general anaesthetic (GA). This gives you a state of controlled unconsciousness (being asleep) to prevent pain or sensation.

Surgery

The procedure usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours to perform, leaving amazing results with minimal scarring.

Gynaecomastia recovery

Most patients require a few days off work to recover from gynecomastia surgery and patients should not exercise for a couple of weeks. A compression garment will also be required to be worn during the recovery period, this garment can easily go unnoticed under clothing.
