Facelift

What is a Facelift?

As you get older, skin and tissues naturally lose their elasticity. This leads to sagging and wrinkles. A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that lifts and tightens these facial tissues.

A facelift involves removing excess skin and tightening facial tissue and muscles and is only focused on the bottom two-thirds of the face. It does not include a neck lift, chin lift, brow lift or eyebag removal, although these are usually combined with a facelift procedure and patients will have a significantly added improvement on overall results when combined together.

How Does A Facelift Work?

An incision is made in the hairline near the temples. The incision goes in front of the ear, down in front of and hugging the earlobe, then back to the lower scalp behind the ears and can kick out at the back of the ear going into the hair line depending on how much skin needs to be removed. Fat and excess skin may be removed or redistributed from the face to add fullness where fat cells have been lost. The underlying muscle and connective tissue are redistributed and tightened. If there’s minimal skin sagging, a “mini” facelift may be performed. This involves shorter incisions however, this tends to be for the younger patient and with only a very slight loosening of the skin.

If a Neck Lift is also going to be performed combined, the excess skin and fat will be removed. The skin of the neck will be tightened and pulled up and back. This is often done through an incision just under the chin or at the nape of the neck.

The incisions often have dissolvable sutures or skin glue. In some cases, you might need to return to the surgeon to have stitches removed. The incisions are made in such a way that they blend with your hairline and facial structure. Where skin is very thin, the surgeon may need to use staples also.

You’ll often have a surgical drainage tube after surgery as well as bandages wrapping your face for 5-7 days.

The procedure is carried out under a general anaesthetic and can take 3-4 hours to perform. It is required that you will stay 1-2 nights in our hospital where our specialised surgical team will monitor your recovery.
We advise you refrain from work for 2 weeks and any strenuous and physical exercise for 6 weeks post operatively.
